My Voice, My Choice: A Conversation with Alyse Nelson and Nika Kovac

I'm just back from Brussels and it was incredible to join Nika Kovač and the My Voice, My Choice team for the culmination of a nearly 3 year campaign. I am thrilled to share that the European Commission has ruled in favor of My Voice, My Choice - the European Citizens’ Initiative that mobilized more than 1.2 million people across all 27 EU member states in support of safe and accessible abortion care. One of the largest grassroots democratic efforts in EU history, it proves that when voices unite, progress is possible. While additional funding was not approved, this provides a path forward for greater abortion access in the EU.

Vital Voices has proudly supported Nika, campaign leader and a 2024 Global Leadership Awards honoree, and this movement every step of the way. Most recently, we coordinated an open letter, signed by eight former presidents and prime ministers alongside other global leaders, which helped underscore the urgency of this moment and call on the European Commission to act.
